Desmond recommended as U-M-Flint provost
A recommendation naming Robert M. Desmond, interim dean of the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University, as U-M-Flint provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs will be presented to the Regents at their April meeting. The appointment would be effective July 1.
Desmond has a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Prior to his work at West Virginia, Desmond served as an associate provost and as acting provost at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in 1988&endash;92. During his tenure at RIT, he was president of the RIT Research Corporation, a for-profit subsidiary of the institute. He also served as dean of the School of Engineering and Computer Science at Oakland University.
He is author or co-author of 30 technical articles and serves as editor-in-chief of Mechanical Engineering News.
Desmond will serve as chief academic officer for the U-M-Flint. Mathematics Prof. Larry Kugler currently is serving in that capacity on an interim basis.
