17-year-old fugitive arrested
A 17-year-old youth not affiliated with the University was
stopped by Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers on April 11 for
a routine traffic violation and found to be wanted by the Ypsilanti
Police on felony charges of robbery. He was turned over to Ypsilanti
Police.
Officers arrest stalker
A man not affiliated with the University was arrested for
aggravated stalking after an incident at the Law School Library. He
was reportedly harassing a woman, also not affiliated with the
University, at the library. DPS police found that a personal
protection order was on file against him and took him into custody.
The case was dismissed when the woman failed to appear in court at
his hearing. Aggravated assault is a felony punishable by up to five
years in prison.
Stolen motorcycles recovered
A 22-year-old man affiliated with the University was charged
with operating a chop shop and receiving and concealing stolen
property valued over $100. Officers found two complete motorcycles
and the frame for a third at Lay Automotive Laboratory on North
Campus. A computer check of the vehicle identification numbers
revealed that the vehicles had been reported stolen. DPS notified the
owner, a resident of North Carolina, and he has identified the
motorcycles. The defendant has been bound over to circuit court and a
June 28 pre-trial hearing has been scheduled.
DPS police assist
Monroe County officers
A man who is not affiliated with the University was picked up
by University police and turned over to Monroe County authorities,
where a felony warrant had been issued for uttering and publishing.
The man had been trying to visit his father, a patient at University
Hospital, when his brother called DPS and reported that the man was
going to harm his father. During a computer check, officers found the
outstanding warrant issued by Monroe County.
Graffiti still troubles DPS, county
authorities
DPS Capt. James Smiley reports that graffiti used by gangs to
mark territory is still a countywide problem. DPS, the Ann Arbor
Police Department and Michigan State Police officials urge anyone who
recognizes graffiti symbols as those marking gang territory to call
law enforcement officers and report it. To report graffiti on

DPS, FBI looking for suspect in bank robbery
DPS officers are interviewing witnesses of an April 29 bank
robbery at Wolverine Tower. The Comerica Bank was entered at
approximately 4 p.m. by a lone male carrying a gun. He is described
as in his late 20s and wearing a leather jacket. He demanded money at
gunpoint and fled on foot down Eisenhower Parkway toward Industrial.
DPS is working with the Ann Arbor Police and the Federal Bureau of
Investigation (FBI) to interview witnesses. Anyone with information
about the robbery is urged to call the DPS Detective Bureau at
764-8559.
