The University Record, January 28, 1998
Amid chants of "No justice, no peace" and "The people united will never be defeated," several hundred members of the University community gathered Jan. 19 for the annual Unity March on South University and State streets and rally on the Diag sponsored by the Black Student Union.
Rally speakers admonished the marchers that the struggle for civil rights is a continuous one, not just one that is advanced on the day we commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.
"It is good to see there are still students who care, who respond to the call," said alumnus Richard Clay. He noted that the civil rights movement was based on "people making sacrifices, even putting their lives on the line, to achieve civil rights, human rights," adding that those who wish to carry on the struggle have to get serious and study and make sacrifices.
