University bands celebrate 100th birthday

In 1897, the first U-M 'football band,' composed of 24 members (above), began playing at U-M football games, although it was not until 1898 that the group first marched onto the football field. Since then the group has expanded to 420 marching scholars (below) from all disciplines in the University. The University of Michigan Marching Band also celebrates the 25th anniversary of the first women marchers. Membership in the marching band was limited to male musicians until 1972. Each year at Homecoming, alumni are welcomed to the ranks of the marching band, sharing history and memories with other musicians. Homecoming this year is Nov. 1, when the Wolverines face Minnesota.
