Buildings should be gender-free

I don’t think Jane Elgass will help raise money to restore Hill Auditorium and Rackham (Record July 6) by referring to them as ‘old ladies’ (grand or otherwise). I continue to be mystified by the common use of this term (or that of ‘dowager’) for older buildings which need restoration. You will notice that neither Robert Kasdin, the Chief Financial Officer, nor President Bollinger made any reference to the gender of these buildings. Ironically, in another story in the same issue, you discussed the renovation of the Crisler Arena and made no mention at all of its gender. Buildings have always been gender-free in my book and it’s fine if they stay that way.
