The University Record, December 14, 1998
It is highly ironic that in a year when the University president and athletic director write an op-ed piece in the New York Times decrying the commercialization of college athletics, the Athletic Department decides to set up a new Web site, www.mgoblue.com, under the domain reserved for commercial for-profit organizations (.com).
This replaced the previous Athletic Department Web site that was part of the University of Michigan site (umich.edu). One can infer from this that the Athletic Department wants to distance itself from the academic enterprise, or that somehow one can get more exposure (and revenue) from positioning the program as commercial.
In either case, this decision seems to fly in the face of the stated direction of making the athletic program more accountable to and part of the University of Michigan as a whole.
