Open Enrollment

Editor’s Note: This is one in a series of articles from the Benefits Office on open enrollment.

The 1998 Open Enrollment for 1999 benefits ends this week. Below are some reminders about the Open Enrollment season and the process that may be helpful to you.

Do you need to call?

If you wish to make changes to your benefits, or to enroll in a Reimbursement Account (Health Care or Dependent Care), you need to call BEL before Oct. 30.

Benefits Enrollment Line (BEL)

Call the Benefits Enrollment Line (BEL) to make your 1998 Open Enrollment choices for your 1999 benefits. BEL will be open for your call every day during Open Enrollment, through Oct. 30, 7:30 a.m.–11:30 p.m., Eastern time, except that BEL will close at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 30. From Ann Arbor, call 763-0425; from elsewhere in the United States, call (800) 236-1492.

For information on how to make your call, review the “How to Use BEL” brochure enclosed with your Personal Worksheet or the section on how to make your call in the Open Enrollment book.

Confirmation Statements

Approximately one week after Open Enrollment ends, Confirmation Statements will be mailed to everyone who is eligible for benefits at the University. Check your statement carefully to be sure it is correct. The statement will show the benefit plans you selected for 1999 as well as 1999 coverage information for each of your dependents.

Adjustment Period

If you find errors on your Confirmation Statement, or decide to change any of your elections for 1999, you can call BEL during the Adjustment Period, Nov. 9–25, to make changes or corrections. The Benefits Enrollment Line (BEL) is open every day during the Adjustment Period, including weekends, 7:30 a.m.–11:30 p.m., Eastern time, except BEL will close at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 25.

While the Benefits Office has books, brochures and other materials on most of the plans, if you have questions about how specific plans cover services, visit that plan company’s Web site, or call the plan company directly. Web addresses and phone numbers for the plans are in the Open Enrollment book.

If you have questions about the new University policy of extending coverage to eligible 19–25 year old dependents for Dental, Vision and Dependent Child Life Insurance, review the October 1998 Open Enrollment News distributed to campus addresses last week. If you still have questions about the policy change, or any other changes for 1999, contact the Benefits Office most convenient to you for answers: Main Campus, 763-1214; Medical Campus, 764-6845; U-M-Flint, (810) 766-6845; U-M-Dearborn, (313) 593-5192.
