The University Record, September 9, 1998
Welcome to the Record
Welcome to The University Record, the U-M's official faculty-staff newspaper, published by News and Information Services.
The Record is published on Wednesdays, weekly September-April except for holiday breaks, twice a month May-July and once in August.
It can be found in racks in more than 65 campus locations, generally in building lobbies. Some departments receive copies via Campus Mail for re-distribution to their faculty and staff. If your department would like to be added to that list, give us a call or send an e-mail message to firstname.lastname@example.org. We'll need the department name, address and number of staff members. We don't print enough copies for everyone, so please share with colleagues.
In addition, the Record is mailed to more than 6,000 faculty and staff retirees and those on leave via third-class mail.
The Record also appears online each week at http://www.umich.edu/~newsinfo/ur_front.htm. Readers who want to get a head start on the Record are encouraged to join RecordAdvance, an automatic e-mail message you'll receive a day before the print copy arrives that includes a brief synopsis of all major articles. To join RecordAdvance, send an e-mail message to RecordAdvanceemail@example.com with the word SUBSCRIBE in the subject line. You can remove yourself from the list at any time by sending an e-mail to RecordAdvance@umich.edu with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject line.
Each issue of the Record carries a number of regular features. The deadline for receipt of information submitted by U-M units or organizations for many of these columns is 5 p.m. the Wednesday seven days before publication. In other words, if you want something published in the Sept. 16 issue, we must receive it by 5 p.m. today (Sept. 9).
Information must be in writing and can be sent via fax (764-7084), Campus Mail (412 Maynard 1399) or via e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Regular columns include:
The Calendar, a listing of on-campus events sponsored by U-M units or organizations, arranged by type of activity in date order and covering activities taking place beginning the day of publication and continuing through the following Friday.
Job Postings, provided by Employment Services. These include position title, employing unit, identification number and posting deadline. More complete information on open jobs is available online at the Record Web site or at http://www.umich.edu/~jobs/.
Applause. These short items highlight honors given by the University and outside organizations to both faculty and staff that are related to their U-M appointment. All faculty and staff are encouraged to submit information for Applause.
Letters to the Editor (when available). The Record welcomes letters from members of the University community. Those on topics of broad University interest will be given preference for publication. Letters should be no more than 500 words in length and must be signed. The editorial staff reserves the right to reject any letter and to edit and/or condense letters for publication, and to limit the number of weeks letters may be published on an issue and the number of times any one person's viewpoint on an issue will be published. Letters may appear in small type. Organizations submitting letters must include the name and address of an appropriate officer. Letters must be received by noon Wednesday to receive consideration for publication in the next issue.
Research Reporter, provided by the Division of Research Development and Administration. These listings include information and application deadlines for a variety of research funding proposals. The Research Reporter newsletter appears once each month.
Studies Seek Subjects. These are offered to units seeking volunteers for research studies at a cost of $25 per listing per issue. Units that wish to have a listing must include a U-M account number when submitting information.
Obituaries for all active and retired faculty and staff. Obituaries for faculty generally are prepared by Record staff following contact by family members or the individual's department. Those for staff should be submitted by the individual's employing unit or the family.
Briefings, the short items that appear on the outside column of some pages. Briefings generally provide more information on upcoming events than is possible to include in the Calendar or announce deadlines for submission of materials to U-M units. Other short items of interest also may appear in Briefings.
Monthly features include "Faculty Perspectives," prepared by an editorial board of the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs; a report on criminal activities and a map showing the campus locations of some criminal activities that is prepared in conjunction with the Department of Public Safety and the Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center; and "The Historical Record."
The Record also carries display advertising on a contract basis for U-M units and outside organizations, with U-M units receiving a discounted rate. Publication of an advertisement does not imply endorsement of the organization or its products or services. Details about advertising are on our Web site or can be obtained by contacting any Record staff member.
Welcome to the Record. We hope you enjoy this issue and the 34 more to follow. If there are articles you'd like to see published, give us a call or send us an e-mail message with your ideas. We'll respond as soon as we can.
