HealthPlus no longer available for new subscribers

Editor's Note: This is the second in a series of articles from the Benefits Office on Open Enrollment, detailing changes to your benefits for 1999. Open Enrollment for 1999 benefits is Oct. 12-30.

From the Benefits Office

HealthPlus of Michigan

Effective Jan. 1, 1999, the University will no longer offer HealthPlus of Michigan as a health insurance plan option for new enrollment. However, anyone who is currently enrolled in HealthPlus may remain in the plan. If you are enrolled in HealthPlus and you switch from HealthPlus to another plan for 1999 or for some future year, you will not be able to return to HealthPlus after that.

There are two reasons the University is dropping the plan: (1) There are only 68 U-M contracts with HealthPlus. (2) The cost is too great to support a plan in which only 68 employees are enrolled. Therefore, HealthPlus will not be among the Open Enrollment choices when you make your call to BEL this year.

The Benefits Office has notified all current enrollees so they would have time to consider in advance of Open Enrollment whether they wish to enroll in a different health insurance plan for 1999.

1998 Open Enrollment Books to be distributed through Campus Mail

The 1998 Open Enrollment books will be distributed to all active faculty and staff through Campus Mail. The Benefits Office, which is working to reduce costs wherever possible, expects to save approximately $100,000 in postage and other mailing costs by using the University's mail system.

In the past, the Personal Worksheet was enclosed with the book; however, since it contains personal, confidential information related to benefits, the Personal Worksheet will be mailed separately to home addresses through the U.S. Mail.

If you do not receive your book by Oct. 2, copies will be available in the Michigan Union, Michigan League, Pierpont Commons, Social Work Building, Weidenbach Hall, LS&A Lobby, Fleming Building, Wolverine Tower, University Center Building at

U-M-Flint, and the Administration Building at U-M-Dearborn. If you do not receive a book by Oct. 7, call the Benefits Office, (734) 763-1214 for a replacement.

The Benefits Office, Mail Service and Human Resources Records and Information Systems (HRRIS) are working together to ensure the most accurate mailing addresses possible as well as a successful distribution.

Education Week

During Education Week, Oct. 5-9, Benefits Office staff will host more than 20 presentations scheduled across all three University campuses to discuss benefits plan changes for 1999. The presentations give faculty and staff an opportunity to ask questions about the changes, as well as to ask general benefits questions. The Benefits Office has mailed a poster to departments that lists dates, times and locations. The schedule also appears on the Benefits Web site at www.umich.edu/~benefits/. Presentations are set for the times listed in the box below.
