Committee recommends non-renewal of apparel license

University leaders will consider a recommendation from the President’s Advisory Committee on Labor Standards and Human Rights to end U-M’s licensing agreement with a company after that corporation’s repeated freedom of association violations.

The Director of Licensing, the President’s Office and the Office of the Vice President and General Counsel will consider the committee’s recommendation not to renew the contract of Russell Corp. when it expires March 31. The company makes athletic apparel.

In a letter dated Feb. 9, the advisory committee, chaired by Dr. Sioban Harlow, informed Director of Licensing Kristin Ablauf of the recommendation.

Since 2007 the committee has been monitoring issues related to Russell Corporation’s factories in Honduras.
