Record Update First

New, secure Wi-Fi connection keeps data safe

MWireless, which provides a secure wireless connection to the Internet, now is available to students, faculty and staff at many campus locations. It uses the 802.11i security standard, the most advanced Wi-Fi encryption available today. All information sent from a laptop or Wi-Fi enabled mobile device is fully encrypted using the connection.

Wireless technologies inherently are less secure than wired ones because information is broadcast and can be intercepted by listening devices. With the increased security provided by MWireless, information sent over the wireless connection cannot be decrypted by such devices.

Special software, instead of a Web browser, is used to connect to the Internet. In addition to being secure, MWireless is easy to use and offers users the ability to store their authentication information (uniqname and UMICH password) on personal wireless devices. This means when users turn on their laptops or handheld wireless devices after they have gone to sleep, they do not need to re-type uniqnames and UMICH passwords.

Help is available at 4-HELP, the Computer Showcase, or at the Campus Computing Sites in Angell Hall or the School of Education.

MWireless is provided for the safety and convenience of users by Information Technology Central Services (ITCS). ITCS strongly encourages everyone to further protect personal data and privacy by adhering to the guidelines on Information Technology Security Services’ Web site, safecomputing.umich.edu/.
