University officials believe there are no current U-M students or faculty in Haiti, which was struck Tuesday by a massive earthquake causing widespread devastation..
Kelly Cunningham, director of public affairs, said a check of programs associated with the Caribbean nation identified no one currently in Haiti, and no Haitian residents currently are enrolled at U-M.
The quake, which registered 7.0 on the Richter scale, struck late Tuesday afternoon and destroyed most of the capital city of Port-Au-Prince, authorities said in published news reports.
Cunningham said that in searching for any U-M personnel, the university checks a variety of sources, including the International Travel Registry, which allows university students, faculty or staff to submit their itinerary and contact information in case of an emergency.
