Not too late to join heart walk

U-M health leaders urge faculty, staff and students to help reach the university’s goal for the upcoming American Heart Association 2010 Start! Heart Walk & NuStep 5K Run this Saturday.

Watch a video encouraging the campus community to walk or run for cardiac health.

The event begins at 9 a.m. at Washtenaw Community College. The 5K run starts at 9:15 a.m. and the Start! Heart Walk begins at 10:15 a.m.

The university’s goal is to raise $100,000 and to attract 1,000 walkers or runners. The goal for the entire event is $1.4 million.

The U-M Cardiovascular Center is a recipient of proceeds from the event, and leaders say every dollar raised comes back to U-M sixfold.

The event is for the whole family. In addition to the walk and the run (which is new this year) participants will find a kid zone with games and activities, health screenings, information about recycling and other green practices, and heart-healthy food.

Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, and stroke is No. 3; together they claim more than 865,000 American lives a year.

Information on how to register to run or walk can be found by going to www.miheartwalk.org. Organizers say those who can’t make the event can be “Walkers in Spirit” and just give.
