CubeSats, or small satellites in a box that can be attached to a spacecraft to achieve orbit, are sparking innovation and providing easier access to space. This video explains the value of CubeSats such as the Radio Aurora Explorer, which was built by U-M students.

Mark West, expert on Japanese law, named 17th Law School dean
Mark D. West, currently the associate dean for academic affairs at the Law School and a highly regarded scholar whose research focuses on the Japanese legal system, will be the 17th dean of the Law School beginning Sept. 1, pending approval by the Board of Regents. West's appointment was announced Wednesday by Provost Philip Hanlon.

Researchers, policymakers and advocates imagine possible futures for Great Lakes
More than 75 researchers, policymakers and advocates gathered at U-M on Wednesday to imagine possible futures for the Great Lakes and to begin charting a course to protect and restore them. The daylong workshop at Palmer Commons marked the first meeting of the Great Lakes Futures Project, a partnership of 21 U.S. and Canadian research institutions.

Hanes Walton Jr. remembered for his humor and dedication to students
Hanes Walton Jr., a professor of political science known for his research, humor and dedication to students, died Monday at age 72. Colleagues and former students fondly remembered the scholar for his positive influence through his teaching and advising, as well as his contributions to political science.

Dr. Shawn Hervey-Jumper first met Laurence Carolin when the 15-year-old was exhibiting symptoms that eventually would be diagnosed as a highly malignant brain tumor. Over time, he came to know Laurence quite well. In the fall issue of Colleagues in Care — Pediatrics, Hervey-Jumper shares his insights on how the young man, who chose to donate his brain for study after his death in 2010, touched his doctor's heart. He also talks about Laurence's gift in this video.
