Road and sidewalk closures for 2013 Student Move-In

Student Move-In begins Aug. 27, with limited move-in for some residents, and concludes the evening of Aug. 30. The increased traffic this activity brings — along with several area street construction projects — may create traffic delays and will necessitate parking space closures and alterations to the city and U-M transit systems.

The following information is provided to assist in planning for this annual activity.

Street adjustments

With the assistance of the City of Ann Arbor, some streets in the immediate vicinity of residence halls will have altered traffic-flows daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 28-30. Traffic alterations will occur on the following streets:

• Thompson Street: One-way traffic flow southbound between East Jefferson Avenue and Packard Street.

• East Madison Street: One-way traffic flow eastbound between Thompson Street and South State Street.

• East Washington Street: One-way traffic flow westbound between Fletcher Street and South State Street.

• East Ann Street: One-way traffic flow eastbound between Zina Pitcher Place and Observatory Street.

• Observatory Street: One-way traffic flow southbound between East Ann Street and Geddes Avenue.

Parking impacts

Most, if not all, parking meters in the immediate vicinity of residence halls will be bagged and reserved for students and families who display the proper Move-In parking permit. Several university parking lots will be converted to Move-In use only for the duration of Move-In.

University lots that will be affected Aug. 27-30 are:

• Lot NC45 will provide overflow parking for students moving into Northwood Apartments.

• Lot M28 (on Washington Heights) will be controlled for Move-In activities from Aug. 27-30.
• The Palmer Structure (N26) will be used for overflow parking for the Hill residence halls. The gates to the Blue permit parking area will open at 10 a.m. starting Tuesday, Aug. 27, through Friday, Aug. 30.

• Lot W18 will be controlled starting Wednesday, Aug. 28, through Friday, Aug. 30, for Move-In activities for West Quad.

• Lots E1 (on North University Court across from Stockwell Hall), W16 and the parallel parking spaces along Richard Kennedy Drive, near West Quad, will be controlled for Move-In activities from Wednesday, Aug. 28, through Friday, Aug. 30.

• The Thompson Structure (W3) will be used for overflow parking for West Quad Move-In. The gates off Thompson Street will open at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, through Friday, Aug. 30.

Bus route adjustments

Both the Ann Arbor Area Transit Authority and University Parking & Transportation Services will be changing some bus routes to accommodate the changes in traffic flow. Please visit their websites for details.

Uniformed Housing Security and Safety Officers and University Police Officers will be on site during Move-In, and will aid in maintaining efficient traffic-flow in the residence hall areas. For additional information about Student Move-In 2013, please see the online Move-In schedule.
