Ten supervisors recognized for aiding work/life balance

The U-M Work/Life Resource Center has announced the recipients of the third annual Work/Life Champion Award for Supervisors. The award recognizes U-M supervisors who promote work-life balance through consistent recognition of and responsiveness to their employees' professional and personal lives.

The 2013 Work/Life Champion Award for Supervisors winners are:

• Debbie Apsley, director of human resources and business affairs, School of Information.

• Grace Brand, manager of clinical nursing, C.S. Mott Children's Hospital.

• Mary Jo Desprez, director of health promotion and community relations.

• Mickey Doyle, associate librarian, UM-Flint Thompson Library.

• Bob Harris, director of UMHS facilities planning and development operations.

• Julie Juno, manager of clinical nursing, Mott Children's Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

• Dr. Dennis Lopatin, senior associate dean, School of Dentistry.

• David Stockson, manager of Architectural Services.

• Gloria Thomas, director of the Center for the Education of Women.

• Patricia Wittkopp, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology.

"Again, for the third year, we received an amazing response — more than 150 nominations from throughout the university. These nominations contained story after story of supervisors who truly understand the positive impact of supporting work/life balance," says Jennie McAlpine, director of Work/Life Programs.

"Work/life balance helps create a supportive, healthy culture and is a contributing factor to making Michigan a great place to work. We are so pleased to be able to express our gratitude to these supervisors and hope they inspire others to emulate their practices."

Staff at all U-M campuses and UMHS nominated 150 faculty or staff supervisors for the award. Award recipients received a gift certificate and plaque, and were honored at the annual Work/Life Resource Center "Connecting the Dots" Conference on Oct. 3, presented by McAlpine.
