LEO rally

"What do we want? A contract. When do we want it? Now!" chant members of the Lecturer Employee's Organization (LEO). The group, which represents instructors from all three campuses, rallied on campus Feb. 19 to express concerns about the progress of contract negotiations. LEO and members of the administrative bargaining team have been meeting steadily since August. "To date we have signed 14 tentative agreements," says Julie Peterson, associate vice president for communications. "It's important to remember that we are negotiating the LEO's first contract, and that normally takes longer because we have to build the entire contract from the bottom up. We remain hopeful that we can complete the bargaining process by the end of the winter term." LEO members hoped to have a contract by the end of this month. The teams have not yet negotiated salary and benefits. (Photo by Martin Vloet, U-M Photo Services)
