Planning for a career in academe? More than 200 graduate
students who answered "yes" to that question attended the
Nov. 17 event, "Getting Ready for an Academic Career: Preparing
Future Faculty Conference," which had an overwhelming response.
Organizers plan to repeat the event in future years, says
Matt Kaplan, associate director of the Center for Research
on Learning and Teaching (CRLT). For a number of years, CRLT
and the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies have
offered a few small sessions for preparing future faculty,
as well as an intensive seminar in May, but the recent event
is the first major day-long conference of its kind on campus,
Kaplan says. Here, Edie Goldenberg, professor of political
science in LSA and a professor in the Ford School of Public
Policy, discusses tenure and faculty worklife. Conference
sponsors were CRLT, Rackham and The Career Center. (Photo by
