U-M marketing groups merge

The University's two marketing organizations have come together under one unit now called Michigan Marketing and Design (MM&D). The joining of Marketing Communications and BMC Media will provide the campus with a higher level of service by combining the talents of two creative teams, says Vice President for Communications Lisa Rudgers.

"The creation of Michigan Marketing and Design will enhance the University's communications activities and strengthen our ability to convey our core messages and values," Rudgers says. "We will be better positioned to shape messages and design communications—print web and multi media—for units all across campus."

The two departments had carved out somewhat separate but sometimes overlapping niches at the University. Marketing Communications provided print and Web publishing and creative services to units across the central academic and administrative units. BMC worked primarily with the U-M Health System and provided video production, in addition to print and Web-based services.

Recently video services were assigned to Michigan Public Media—the U-M public broadcasting entity that has radio and television stations, and a cable-distributed Michigan Channel, available locally on Comcast—and the print and Web services of the two marketing departments combined to offer what MM&D Director Brett Ashley says will be a higher level of expertise for campus clients.

"We're very excited about the merger. The expanded staff gives us more flexibility and depth to better support our campus clients creatively and functionally," Ashley says.

Current clients will continue to work with many of the same professionals they have come to know through the respective organizations, Ashley says, but they now will have additional resources. Since both organizations' rate cards were similar, clients won't see much change in the cost of services, she says.

For the time being the teams will operate from their current locations in the Buhr Building, 200 Hill Street, Suite 2000, and the Northern Brewery Office (BMC), 1327 Jones Drive.

MM&D provides communications consulting and strategic planning; creative concept development and messaging; graphic design and production; and Web design and production services. Michigan Productions offers studio and on-location video production services, including filming, direction, editing, electronic graphics, duplication and distribution.
