New name, renovations for Athletics building
The Marie Dorothy Hartwig Women's Athletic Offices Building will be re-named the Marie Dorothy Hartwig Administration Building following board approval. Additionally, the regents approved a $3.5 million renovation. The building, home to the Athletic Department ticket office, sits between Weidenbach Hall and the new Ross Academic Center.
Jickling Lyman Powell Associates will design the renovations of the original 1912 structure. Interior upgrades of the 1985 addition also will be completed. Funding will be provided by Athletic Department resources.
U-M-Flint hall renovation moves forward
The regents approved the schematic design for the renovation of the David M. French Hall at U-M-Flint. A 68,000-square-foot renovation of classrooms, faculty offices and support areas will address code and accessibility requirements, and enhance the ability of the campus to meet the learning needs of students. The Fiscal Year 2005 Supplemental Capital Outlay Request to the State of Michigan and U-M-Flint resources will fund the $9.35 million project. Construction is scheduled to be completed in fall 2008.
Hospital MRI waiting room to expand
Support spaces for the University Hospital's Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) area will be expanded to meet growing demand. The existing space will be reconfigured to increase waiting room seating and image reading area capacity. In order to minimize disruption to ongoing operations, the 2,740-gross-square-feet renovation will be completed in phases. U-M Hospitals and Health Centers (UMHHC) resources will fund the $900,000 project, which is scheduled to be completed next winter.
Floors at Arbor Lakes to be strengthened
The floor in the Arbor Lakes 2 Building machine room will be reinforced to double its load-bearing capacity. This will enable the Medical Center Information Technology department to install additional technology equipment in the facility. The engineering firm Stantec Consulting will design the project. UMHHC will fund the $700,000 project, which is scheduled to be completed this summer.
Mojo and Ross authorized for bid
The regents authorized issuing two campus construction projects for bids and awarding contracts. Bids will be issued for the comprehensive renovation of Mosher-Jordan Hall and construction of the Hill Dining Center, as well as the remaining bid packages for the Stephen M. Ross School of Business facilities enhancement project.
The MoJo project, which will include creation of a new multi-level lobby and entrance, infrastructure upgrades, including air conditioning, and a new two-story dining center, is estimated to cost $65.1 million and is scheduled to be open for occupancy in fall 2008. The Ross School project, estimated to cost $145 million, will erect a new seven-story building following demolition of three buildings. Construction is scheduled to be completed in fall 2008.
Regents informed of real estate sales
Two pieces of University real estate were sold in March. A vacant lot in Loudon, Tenn., originally given to U-M in November, was sold for $530,000. Net proceeds from the sale will benefit the Kellogg Eye Center.
The Gordon Hall property in Dexter, originally given to U-M in 1950, was sold for $1.5 million. Net proceeds will benefit financial aid for students.

Dr. Bruce Carlson, professor of anatomy in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology in the Medical School, and research professor in the Institute of Gerontology, effective Jan. 31. He joined the University in 1966. He was a pioneer in the field of mammalian regeneration. Carlson conducted extensive laboratory research in the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, the Netherlands, Finland and New Zealand.
Dr. Bruce Friedman, professor of pathology, effective April 30. He joined U-M in 1973. Friedman has authored more than 80 publications in information technology and its strategic position in the medical electronic record and other areas of health care. He has served in several administrative positions at U-M, including director of Pathology Data Systems. He is founding president of the Association for Pathology Informatics.
