Dennis Assanis, the Jon R. and Beverly S. Holt Professor of Engineering and professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2008 American Society of Mechanical Engineers Internal Combustion Engine Award. It recognizes eminent achievement or distinguished contribution over a substantial period of time.

Dr. Matthias Kretzler has been named by The Alliance for Lupus Research as the Leadership Circle Sponsored Investigator for 2007-08. He is a recipient of an ALR Target Identification in Lupus Grant for his project, Gene Expression-based Molecular Classification of Lupus Nephritis Biopsies.

Denise Landis, manager of Critical Care Transport, U-M Hospital Survival Flight, has been chosen to receive at the Air Medical Transport Conference in October the Barbara A. Hess Award. It recognizes an individual who has significantly contributed to the enhancement, development and/or promotion of the emergency medical industry through research and/or educational efforts.

Dr. Samuel Silver, assistant dean for research, professor of internal medicine and director of the Cancer Center Network, has received the Statesman Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The award is intended as a tribute to members whose contributions to the society have been invaluable.

Robert Groves, director of the Survey Research Center of the Michigan Institute for Social Research, has been selected as a recipient of the 2008 Julius Shiskin Memorial Award for Economic Statistics. Groves is recognized for innovative statistical research that led to improved economic statistics through important contributions to the theory and practice of survey methods for the conduct of sample surveys.

Dr. Anna Lok was honored as the Hepatitis B Foundation's Distinguished Scientist of 2008 at the foundation's recent Crystal Ball Gala. Lok was honored for her work in advancing the science and medicine pertaining to hepatitis B.


Dr. Reed Dunnick, Fred Jenner Hodges Professor of Radiology, and chair and professor of radiology in the U-M Medical School was elected vice chair of the American College of Radiology during the ACR’s 85th Annual Meeting and Chapter Leadership Conference May 17-21, in Washington, D.C.

Rick Boothman, chief risk officer at the U-M Health System, was recognized with the designation as one of the In-House Leaders in the Law by Midwest In-House and Michigan Lawyers Weekly. Boothman was one of 20 honorees selected for the award, scheduled for presentation April 24 at Laurel Manor in Livonia.

Dr. Jeffrey Halter, director of the Geriatrics Center and Institute of Gerontology, professor of internal medicine and chief of the Division of Geriatric Medicine, has been named the 2008 Nascher/Manning Award recipient of the American Geriatrics Society. The award was scheduled for presentation at the society's annual meeting May 2 in Washington, D.C.

The Multimedia Educational Research for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) online community that makes available peer-reviewed online teaching and learning materials has selected U-M's local Community of Practice to receive the group's Institutional Stewardship Award as an outstanding example of stewardship in spreading the use of the online community. Victor Wong of the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Information, the leader of the U-M MERLOT chapter, has been invited to accept the award at the MERLOT conference Aug. 7-10 in Minneapolis.


Mark Nelson, recruiting and admissions product manager, Michigan Administrative Information Services, has been selected to serve on the Admissions Product Advisory Group within the Higher Education User Group, which influences the strategic direction, development and implementation of Oracle/PeopleSoft products and services that provide the software for several M-Pathways administrative systems.


Rodney Ewing, the Donald R. Peacor Collegiate Professor of Geological Sciences with joint appointments in Nuclear Engineering & Radiological Sciences and Materials Science & Engineering, recently was selected to be a fellow of the American Ceramic Society, and also became a fellow of the Materials Research Society at the group's spring meeting March 24-28 in San Francisco.
