Bids to be issued for new Law School academic building and commons The planned new academic building for the Law School and the Law School commons addition to Hutchins Hall received final approval from the Board of Regents on Thursday. When completed in the spring of 2012, the new academic building will house classrooms, multi-purpose and clinic work spaces, and offices for law school faculty and administrators. The new commons addition will provide needed student study, interaction and support spaces. Additionally, the project will include life safety upgrades to Hutchins Hall and the Cook Library. Retirements Dr. Dorit Adler, professor of radiology in the Medical School, effective May 31. Adler joined the faculty in 1984. She is recognized as a leading national authority in the field of breast imaging and has authored more than 70 publications and seven book chapters. Adler also served as a guest examiner in breast radiology for the American Board of Radiology and in 1994 was named by Working Woman Magazine as one of the top 16 radiologists in the country, specializing in mammography. Robert Fakler, associate professor of mathematics, College of Arts, Sciences and Letters, UM-Dearborn, effective April 30. Fakler joined the faculty in 1972 and has served on the Dearborn campus executive committee of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Academic Affairs Advisory Committee. He is known as an expert in the area of geometric probability and has influenced many engineering, science, and mathematics students through his teaching of the pre-calculus and calculus sequence. A. Roberto Frisancho, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, professor of anthropology in LSA, and research professor in the Center for Human Growth and Development, effective May 31. Frisancho joined the faculty in 1969 and has authored six books, including human adaptation books considered to be the essential texts for advanced courses in the field. In 2008 he was awarded the Human Biology Association's highest honor, the Franz Boas Distinguished Achievement Award. John Gland, professor of chemistry and applied physics in LSA, effective May 31. Gland joined the faculty in 1988 and pioneered a method for characterizing absorbed monolayers and surface reactions in reactive atmospheres. He served on the editorial advisory board of the science journal Langmuir and was awarded the Giuseppe Parravano Award in Catalysis from the Michigan Catalysis Society.
Thomas Green, John Philip Dawson Collegiate Professor of Law and professor of law, Law School, and professor of history, LSA, effective May 31. Green joined the university in 1972 and served as president-elect of the American Society for Legal History. He has been the director of the Colloquium on the History of Law in Western Society since 1979 and served as a member of the Council of the North American Conference on British studies. Srinika Jayaratne, professor of social work in the School of Social Work, effective May 31. Jayaratne joined the faculty in 1979 and served as assistant dean for research, associate dean, and associate dean of faculty affairs at various points in his career. In 2008, he was honored with a Fulbright Award to continue research in Sri Lanka. He served as investigator or co-investigator on many research projects and has published extensively including journal articles, books, and book chapters. Alan Krisch, professor of physics in LSA, effective May 31. Krisch joined the faculty in 1964 and did extensive work on the internal structure of the proton, more recently focusing on spin effects in high energy collisions. His Spin Physics Center led to the development of the world's first high-energy, polarized proton beams. He also served on the University Research Opportunities Program Advisory Committee and was honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship and election as a fellow of the American Physical Society. John Lawler, associate professor of linguistics in LSA, effective May 31. Lawler joined the university in 1973 and has authored several software applications including the widely-known "Chomskybot." In 1992 he was awarded a Unanimous Resolution of Gratitude from the Linguistic Society of America and received the Excellence in Education Award from LSA in 1991, '92, and '93.
Richard Raymond, assistant research scientist, LSA, effective March 31. Raymond joined the university in 1982 and his research focused on the effects of a proton's spin on its high energy collisions with other protons or nuclei. His research was featured in 32 publications as well as many conferences and symposia. He also served as a dedicated mentor for all undergraduate and graduate students who worked in the Spin Physics Center. Brett Seabury, associate professor of social work in the School of Social Work, effective May 31. Seabury joined the faculty in 1975 and has practiced social work in mental health and child welfare settings as well as in the U.S. Army. His primary research has been interpersonal practice. He has published many journal articles, books, and book chapters, and has presented national and international papers and lectures. Marilyn Shatz, professor of psychology and professor of linguistics in LSA effective May 31. Shatz joined the university in 1977 and from 1995-2000 directed the Program in Linguistics. She then chaired the Department of Linguistics from 2000-01. She also founded the Consortium for Language, Society, and Thought in 2000 and directed it until 2006. She has been honored with several awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Fulbright Award. Vitalij Shevoroshkin, professor of linguistics and professor of Slavic languages and literatures in LSA, effective May 31. Shevoroshkin joined the faculty in 1979 and has authored many books, articles, and edited a seminal series of books. He served as a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences and has been honored for his work on ancient languages, including a University Faculty Recognition Award.
A.W. Brian Simpson, Charles F. and Edith J. Clyne Professor of Law and professor of law, Law School, effective May 31. Simpson joined the university in 1987 and recently published his ninth book. He received a Doctorate of Civil Laws from Oxford University in 1976 and was elected a fellow of the British Academy in 1983 and to the Council of Selden Society in 1993. In 1995 he was made an honorary fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford. Jeffrey Stern, professor of psychology, College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters, UM-Dearborn, effective April 30. Stern joined the university in 1969 and did extensive work in the area of physiological psychology. His work on neuroendocrine regulation has led to applications for the treatment of human obesity. He also helped develop the health psychology specialization in the Master of Science in Psychology Program. Marilyn Svejda, associate professor nursing in the School of Nursing, effective May 31. Svejda joined the faculty in 1981 and served as coordinator of the Infant, Child, and Adolescent Health Track in the School of Nursing for 22 years. She also served as the project director for the Initiative for Excellence in Clinical, Education, Practice, and Scholarship, leading a partnership between the School of Nursing and the U-M Health System. B. Alan Taylor, professor of mathematics in LSA, effective May 31. Taylor joined the university in 1965 with primary research in complex analysis. He has co-authored more than 120 papers. He served two terms as department chair between 1994 and 2001 and oversaw the establishment of the Applied and Interdisciplinary Mathematics Graduate Program. He was instrumental in establishing Mathematics Career Day and the Mathematics Awards Ceremony. James Turner, professor of architecture in the A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning, effective May 31. Turner joined the faculty in 1976 and was a member of the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) and received ACADIA's Award of Excellence in Teaching in 2002. He served on the undergraduate admissions committee for nearly a decade and was interim chair of the Doctoral Program in Architecture in 2000-01. G. Joseph Vining, Harry Burns Hutchins Collegiate Professor of Law and professor of law, Law School, effective May 31. Vining joined the university in 1969 and has published four books with work focusing on connections of law, science, religion, and human nature. He was a resident fellow at the Rockefeller Foundation in Bellagio in 1997 and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Law Institute.
Walter Weber, Jr., Gordon Maskew Fair and Earnest Boyce Distinguished University Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering, professor of civil engineering, environmental engineering and chemical engineering in the College of Engineering, effective May 31. Weber joined the faculty in 1963 and was the founding director of the College of Engineering Academic Program of Concentration in Environmental Sustainability and established generous endowments in his name. Gernot Windfuhr, professor of Iranian studies in LSA, effective May 31. Windfuhr joined the university in 1966 and authored a pioneering textbook for teaching modern Persian language, used throughout the United States. He chaired the Department of Near Eastern Studies from 1977-87 and has had research funded by awards from the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the National Endowment for Humanities. Paul Zitzewitz, professor of physics, College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters and professor of science education, School of Education, UM-Dearborn, effective April 30. Zitzewitz joined the faculty in 1973 and has authored four integrated science textbooks. He chaired the Department of Natural Sciences and was associate dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters. He has received numerous awards including Dearborn's Distinguished Teaching Award in 2007.
Jens Zorn, professor of physics in LSA, effective May 31. Zorn joined the university in 1962 with research focusing on atomic and molecular physics. He was honored with the Amoco Foundation Faculty Teaching Award in 1994. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and co-chaired the 1990 International Conference on Atomic Physics. He also assisted with the construction of large, welded, bronze sculptures displayed on campus.
