Family stepping for LUNGevity

With more than 40 years working at U-M Hospital, Carl Allen Sr. often can be found wearing his walking shoes. But when he’s not on his feet arranging or transporting medical equipment, he’s taking strides to find a cure for lung cancer.

Allen, who lost his mother Ruth Adams to lung cancer in 1975, will be taking part in the Fifth Annual Find Your Breath Walk-a-Thon, scheduled for April 11 at Ingalls Mall, 915 E. Washington Street. The event is coordinated by University Students Acting Against Cancer.

Since 2006 Carl Allen Sr., his eldest son, Carl Allen Jr., who works in Medical Center Information Technology, their families and many supporters have participated in the walk-a-thon benefiting the LUNGevity Foundation. In the last three years their group, Sonya’s Faithful Steppers, has raised close to $30,000 in support of lung cancer research.

The Allen’s commitment to the walk-a-thon was solidified in 2006 when Sonya Allen started Sonya’s Faithful Steppers while battling stage-4 lung cancer. A non-smoker, she was dedicated to the mission of LUNGevity and wanted to increase awareness of the facts surrounding lung cancer research. Since her death in 2007 at age 38, her daughter and team captain Christiana Allen has continued the effort.

In support of the event, Damon’s Grill, 3150 Boardwalk, will donate 20 percent of all food purchases on March 27-28 to the LUNGevity Foundation. A certificate that must be presented to the server at the time of purchase is available for download at
