U-M Heart Walk team joins fight against cardiovascular disease

As the University is a leader in cardiovascular research, education and treatment, Team U-M also plans to lead in the American Heart Association Start! Heart Walk.

The event is May 9 at Washtenaw Community College.

The nation's No. 1 and 3 killers are heart disease and stroke. The Heart Walk provides the means to fight back, and make a real and lasting difference, organizers say.

A 2008 report shows the American Heart Association awarded $3.9 million in grants to the Cardiovascular Center, the largest amount in the Midwest.

To register a Heart Walk team or join a U-M team, go to or attend a Heart Walk Kick Off 10 a.m.-3 p.m. today (March 12) at the University Hospital Towsley Link. There is no registration fee.

New team captains will receive an insulated lunch bag or mug and may qualify for a personal CPR kit. Walkers raising $25 will receive the 2009 U-M Heart Walk T-shirt.
