Coleman: Funding impasse discouraging; push is on for Promise
President Mary Sue Coleman told a faculty governance panel Monday that state funding for higher education remains tied up in a state budget impasse, and that university officials will continue to press the case that funding colleges and universities is crucial to Michigan’s economic future. She also reiterated the importance of keeping in place some form of the Michigan Promise Scholarship, merit-based financial aid that a legislative panel voted last week to scrap.

Cancer researchers earn $6.9M grant to examine retrovirus linked to cancer, AIDS
Researchers at the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center were awarded a grant worth $6.9 million over five years. The grant, one of 42 awarded across the country, will fund research into endogenous retroviruses, examining whether one retrovirus, HERV-K, plays a role in some cancers.

Alternative “Walks to Cure Diabetes” set for three U-M sites
The annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Ann Arbor-Dexter Walk to Cure Diabetes is Sunday at Hudson Mills Metropark, but for people who can’t make it to the walk, organizers willl bring the walk to them. From noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, alternative JDRF walks will take place at University Hospital and at the Central Campus and north Campus diags.
