A recent episode of “Out of the Blue: The Michigan Difference” profiles Cultivating Community, a student-based initiative started in 2004. It operates gardens across the campus and engages with middle and high school students in Detroit and Ann Arbor to improve their diets.

 Alcohol Serving Size Challenge to aid drinking choices
It’s not easy to know how much alcohol is in a drink, and that can make responsible decision-making about alcohol difficult. MHealthy is launching an online Alcohol Serving Size Challenge, which is designed to show people how much alcohol likely will be in their favorite drinks.

REMINDER: Francis Medal award ceremony is Thursday
U-M will present one of its highest honors, the Thomas Francis, Jr. Medal in Global Public Health, to Dr. Alfred Sommer during a ceremony Thursday. The event will include an address by Sommer titled “Vitamin A Deficiency, Health and Mortality,” which will be followed by a panel discussion.

Michigan's University Research Corridor partners are showcasing innovation, business and research news through a new monthly e-publication, The URC universities — U-M, Michigan State University and Wayne State University — formed the alliance in 2006 to transform, diversify and strengthen the state's economy.

Paying it forward
While studying at Stanford University, Dr. Juanita Merchant took to heart the advice of two role models who urged her to obtain M.D. and Ph.D. degrees if she wanted to succeed as a minority and a woman in academia. Now the H. Marvin Pollard professorship in Gastrointestinal Sciences at the Medical School, Merchant is sharing her experience with the next generation of scientists, mentoring undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty. “As a minority myself, I want to help other minorities further their careers,” Merchant says.
