The 2011 tornado season has set a record for fatalities through the month of May. Perry Samson, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Atmospheric Science, discusses some of the factors contributing to those figures and why the number of reported tornadoes is on the rise.

Legacy football jersey unveiled for game under the lights
To celebrate the first night game ever played at Michigan Stadium, a Sept. 10 contest against Notre Dame, the U-M football team will wear a specially designed legacy football jersey that was unveiled at a ceremony Friday evening. The announcement coincided with the three-month countdown to the historic game at the Big House.

Union staff election for DPS Oversight Committee runs through June 24
The election for the union staff representative for the Department of Public Safety Oversight Committee is under way. Online voting is available today through 4 p.m. on June 24. Members of the following unions are eligible to vote in this election: AFSCME, HOA, IUOE, MNA and Skilled Trades.

REMINDER: Annual mouth guard clinic set for June 25
Free, customized mouth guards will be made for amateur athletes ages 5 and older during the School of Dentistry’s annual mouth guard clinic 9 a.m.-noon June 25. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Athletes will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Vepsians of northern Russia number just more than 8,000, but only 6,000 of them speak the native language. Of the remaining speakers, most are more than 50 years old. As part of her honors thesis, LSA senior Bryn Hauk worked to document and preserve this endangered language.
