ITS urges switch to Microsoft antivirus software before June

Computer users running U-M's version of McAfee VirusScan on their personal Windows computers should plan to switch to Microsoft Security Essentials soon. The change can be accomplished by uninstalling McAfee and installing MSE. For help, contact the ITS Service Center at 764-HELP or

Those who personally manage a university-owned computer will need to uninstall McAfee and install Microsoft Forefront themselves. For help, they should contact their unit desktop support team.

The change is required because U-M's McAfee VirusScan license expires in June. Switching to Microsoft antivirus software will result in substantial savings for the university.

MSE for personally owned Windows computers is free. Microsoft Forefront for university-owned computers already is included in the university’s enterprise licensing agreement. Plus, Microsoft antivirus products are competitively rated by several independent reviewers in the antivirus research community.

Install Microsoft antivirus software now will give users a head start, and will help them avoid virus risk s they could face after U-M’s McAfee license expires.
