"Thousands of people have already signed up and our hope is to reach or exceed last year's participation of more than 12,000 people," says Jessica Sobolewski, MHealthy physical activity coordinator. "This is our seventh year and Active U has grown to be a mainstay for helping people jump start their fitness routines in the winter and spring months."

Popular program features returning in 2012 include:

• Participation as an individual or as part of a team.

• The ability to log activity minutes online or using a smartphone.

• Prize drawings.

• A T-shirt for successfully completing the program.

New features for 2012 include:

• Spouses/OQAs can now join Active U.

• A team now is defined as two or more people.

• Participants can support a U-M school, college, fund or other area-of-choice by donating through U-M Giving.

• New requirements for a successful week in Active U: Log at least 30 minutes per day, at least three days per week.

"Active U is for all fitness levels and encourages you to get moving at least 30 minutes a day, three days a week," says Sobolewski. "You can get your 30 minutes of activity by combining a few shorter sessions of 10 minutes each, or by doing 30 minutes or more continuously — whatever works best for you to get at least 90 minutes of activity each week."

Active U participants can track their activity through May 7 at
