Vets, active-duty military have new information 'base' on Wolverine Access

Staff, faculty, and students who have served or are now serving in the U.S. military have a new site on Wolverine Access to record information about their service and related matters. All university-affiliated veterans and active-duty military are encouraged to tap this resource.

The Veterans/Military Status self-service site supports the university's mandatory reporting requirements and adds value to several efforts in support of veterans and active-duty military faculty, staff, and students.

"Information about veteran status is required for the university's reports under the Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 and the Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act," says Anthony Walesby, associate vice provost for academic and faculty affairs, and senior director of the Office of Institutional Equity. "As importantly, this information will contribute to the many programs that support veteran and active duty military members of the university community."

Phil Larson, head of the Student Veterans Assistance Program [SVAP], the veterans support programs on campus.

"The new website is important on many levels," says Larson. "It can add value to our Vet to Vet Program, which helps connect faculty, staff, and student volunteer mentors who have served with incoming veterans, National Guard and reservists. It is important to prior military members to know there are others on campus that they can talk to who have had similar experiences.

"The new site also will help SVAP reach more active-duty and retired military in our ranks, to let them know about U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs programs, and about athletic and other campus and community events that offer discounts to them. We also want to tap the new site to help get word out about special events that veterans and active-duty military may want to attend or participate in, like the university's annual Veteran's Day events and opportunities to inform the university community about military service."

The Veterans/Military Status self-service site is located in the "Campus Personal Information" section of the Wolverine Access self-service menu. Users will be asked to log in with their U-M uniqname and password.

The site allows users to record their branch of service; whether they currently are serving in the National Guard or reserves; and — for students — whether they are a dependent of a U.S. veteran or active service member.
