As part of an environmental science class taught by Emily Saarinen, assistant professor of biology, students at UM-Dearborn assist their community by applying what they've learned in lectures. This video shows how they helped Howe Elementary School in Dearborn develop a greenhouse.

New executive director named at Mott, Von Voigtlander hospitals
Paul A. King, who has successfully led a large, Los Angeles-based pediatric group practice for the past eight years, has been selected as the new executive director of U-M’s top-ranked C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital. King is a senior executive at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Michigan Road Scholars complete 2013 cycle through state
The 14th annual Michigan Road Scholars trek around Michigan ended on Friday, and the scholars agree it was a wise investment of time and resources. In its five-day whirlwind tour of the state, MRS 2013 stopped in seven Michigan cities to meet with entrepreneurs, CEOs and small business owners, community service leaders, artists and academics.

U-M professors win prestigious fellowships in the humanities
Six professors from LSA are among 88 faculty members nationwide awarded fellowships by the American Council of Learned Societies. U-M fellows are Elizabeth Anderson, Hussein Fancy, Martha Jones, Sarah Moss, Ellen Muehlberger and Christian de Pee.

'A creation of my own'
Henry Philip Tappan believed deeply in creating a place where professors spread existing knowledge by teaching and, by deep study and research, also made new knowledge. He envisioned a new observatory for the fledgling Ann Arbor campus that would signal Michigan’s serious intentions. One man, however, was determined to bring down Tappan and his creation.
