Appointed by President Obama in 2009 as assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Air and Radiation, McCarthy was confirmed as administrator of the agency in July.

"Gina McCarthy has been leading state and federal efforts to address the harmful effects of pollution for more than three decades," said David Uhlmann, director of the ELPP and Jeffrey F. Liss Professor from Practice.

"In her short time as EPA administrator, she has re-energized the agency and redoubled its efforts to address global climate change. We are thrilled that Ms. McCarthy is visiting Michigan Law to present the keynote address for our fall 2013 environmental conference and motivating Michigan students to promote a sustainable future."

The two-day conference, titled Environmental Law and Public Health, features experts on topics such as pollution, children's health, pesticides, urban agriculture, industrial siting, and sustainable communities.

McCarthy will speak at 5 p.m. Thursday at Honigman Auditorium (Room 100), Hutchins Hall. After McCarthy speaks, there will be a Q&A session with her, moderated by Uhlmann.
