Susan Murphy earns prestigious MacArthur Fellowship
Susan Murphy, a U-M statistician poised to make a significant impact on the field of personalized medicine, has been chosen by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation as one of 24 "exceptionally creative individuals" in its 2013 fellowship class recognized for their creative achievements and future potential.

Faculty and staff asked to save the date for campaign kickoff
Faculty, staff, students and community members are being asked to come together Nov. 8 for events launching the Victors for Michigan campaign, the most ambitious fundraising campaign in U-M history. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. on Ingalls Mall, to be followed by an event in Hill Auditorium and an outdoor after-party.

Grad students, postdocs learn strategies to further careers
Nearly 250 graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from 16 U-M schools and colleges learned about strategies and resources for success in academic careers at the 11th annual "Preparing Future Faculty" conference on Tuesday.

REMINDER: Presidential search forums continue today, Friday
The remaining one-hour public forums designed to gather input on the search for U-M's next president will be today and Friday:
• Noon today, Hutchins Hall, Room 100, for Ann Arbor faculty and staff.
• 6:30 p.m. today, Modern Languages Building, Room 1200, for students.
• 2 p.m. Friday, BorgWarner Auditorim, for the UM-Dearborn campus.
• 5:30 p.m. Friday, Blau Auditorium, for the general public.

SECURITY BULLETIN: On-campus solicitation scam alert
Several students have reported being approached by people selling magazines or books, purportedly to fund overseas trips. Most of the incidents have occurred in University Housing, including Northwood Apartments.

A break from prison life
Lora Lempert's workday is far from over when she exits the UM-Dearborn parking lot. The professor of sociology often heads west to the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti. There she welcomes a new crop of students, incarcerated women who are part of the Women’s College Program. For them, the program is an opportunity to briefly escape from prison life.
